Okay, real talk, moms. Is decluttering one of those things you always mean to do, but then life happens? Same. It can feel like such a huge project that it’s easier to just live with the mess. But here’s the thing—I found this super simple hack that makes decluttering painless, and dare I say, even kind of fun? It’s called the “one box method,” and once you hear how it works, you’ll wonder why you didn’t try it sooner!

The One Box Method

Here’s the deal. Anytime you have an empty box lying around (Amazon delivery, diaper box, whatever), grab it, and go around your house filling it with stuff you no longer want or need. That’s it. Once the box is full, you take it to your local donation center, sell the items, or toss them (if they can’t be reused). It’s this simple, low-pressure trick that lets you declutter a little at a time without turning your house upside down or making a giant mess in the process.

I saw this hack on Instagram thanks to @kerry.daehn6, and honestly, I’m obsessed. Some people use this method as a part of their regular cleaning routine, like every time they finish a box of diapers. Smart, right?

For me, I like to set aside 15 minutes on Mondays and another 15 on Saturdays to tidy up and deep clean one specific “zone” of my home. (Click here for my blog post on my zone system!) During those times, I’ll keep an empty box handy to fill as I go. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it actually gets done. No more avoidance because “I don’t have time.”

Why This Hack Works

The genius of the one 05box method is it works in bite-sized chunks. There’s no giant pile of stuff taking over your living room and making you want to quit before you start. Instead, it’s a slow and steady win every time you fill up a box. Plus, it’s so satisfying to watch the clutter literally leave your house.

And here’s the best part: the less stuff you have, the easier it is to clean. No more spending an hour clearing counters or picking up toys before you can even start vacuuming. Trust me, future you will thank you.

Make It Fun

If you’re anything like me, you need a little motivation to make cleaning and decluttering less “ugh.” That’s why I created Domestic Daydreams Radio, and I think you’re going to love it!

Picture this: 30-minute cleaning routines set to nostalgic 1950s radio shows like Dragnet! Father Knows Best, Fibber McGee & Molly, Suspense! Morning or evening, whenever you’re ready, just press play, and I’ll guide you through a cleaning routine that feels like a relaxing escape into the good ol’ days (while still getting stuff done). It’s like turning chores into a little self-care moment.

Even better? I’ve got challenges to keep you on track too. Whether you want to declutter specific zones or tackle those never-ending cleaning to-dos, Domestic Daydreams Radio makes it easy, and dare I say, kind of fun! You can try out some episodes of the routines here (morning) and here (evening).

Start Today

Next time you finish off a box of diapers or open up your latest Amazon haul, don’t toss that box. Instead, take 15 minutes to fill it up with things that don’t spark joy (thanks, Marie Kondo). Donate, sell, or trash them, and poof! You’re on your way to a lighter, less cluttered home.
