My Super Simple Routine For Always Having a Clean House (Without Cleaning All Day)

I know the struggle. You feel like you’re picking up the same toys, wiping the same sticky counters, and chasing the same messes on repeat, every. single. day. And at the end of it all, you’re still staring at a house that somehow isn’t clean. Same, girl! But I’ve finally figured out a routine that keeps my house clean without making me feel like I’m living a Groundhog Day of doing laundry and dishes!

This isn’t about perfection or scrubbing baseboards daily. It’s about creating a system that works for you, keeps things clean, and leaves you enough time to actually enjoy your family and your day. Bonus? This system works even if (like me) you’ve got ADHD, are a working mom, or struggle with consistency. Here’s the routine that changed everything for me:

Step 1: My Morning 30-Minute Cleaning Routine

First thing in the morning, I press play on one of my Domestic Daydreams 1950s radio show cleaning routines, and I just go. It’s like having a fun, nostalgic coach cheering you on while you knock out your cleaning. Here’s what the routine includes:

  1. Air the beds. Instead of making them right away, I pull back the covers neatly and crack a window to air everything out. It’s great for reducing allergies and keeping dust mites at bay.
  2. Do a load of laundry. I follow an assigned laundry schedule so everything gets washed in the right order. Monday is whites & lights, Tuesday is delicates… and so on. No more wondering what to wash or dealing with that mountain of dirty clothes on Sunday!
  3. Unload the dishwasher. If there are any breakfast dishes, I load them right away so the counters stay clear.
  4. Declutter. I grab a basket or box and do a quick speed pickup around the house, running from room to room putting things away. This takes five minutes max!
  5. A 15-minute weekly cleaning task. Each day, the podcast guides me through a weekly task like cleaning the bathroom, dusting, or vacuuming. These tasks are spread out so I never feel overwhelmed, and my house stays clean without marathon cleaning sessions.

And mama, this system is so easy to stick with. The hardest part is pressing play, and once you’ve done that, it’s autopilot. These routines include everything you need to do to stay ahead of the mess and take only 30 minutes. Want to try it? I even have free episodes you can grab right here!

Step 2: Prep Dinner in the Crockpot

After my cleaning routine, I throw dinner into the crockpot. I’m able to knock out the prep early in the day, and I always clean up the dishes and mess as I go. There’s nothing better than coming home to a clean kitchen AND having dinner ready to go! Each week I also prep things for these lunches on the go since we’re out of the house.

Here are a few no-mess lunch ideas you can prep ahead.

  • Make chicken or tuna salad in advance and bring bread or wraps for sandwiches on the go.
  • Prep boiled eggs and pair them with crackers, cheese slices, and fruit for a little outdoor “charcuterie board.”
  • Cook up fillings for chicken wraps for the week, freeze them, and defrost as needed.
  • Toss diced deli meats, cheese, and veggies together with mayo/mustard for an easy spread for crackers or sandwiches.

Step 3: Get Out of the House!

Once the house is clean and dinner is handled, we’re out the door. Whether it’s heading to the park, the library, or just playing in the backyard, I make it a priority to get my kiddo (and myself) outside. Fresh air and sunshine work wonders for mental health! Plus, if your kids are out of the house, they aren’t making more mess!

This time is also a great chance to connect, laugh, and burn off energy. By the time we get home, everyone is recharged and ready for the evening.

Step 4: Come Home to a Clean House & Wrap Up the Day

Here’s where the magic happens. After a busy day, we come home to a clean house, and we sit down as a family for dinner.

Evening Routine: After dinner, I press play on my Domestic Daydreams Evening Cleaning Routine. This podcast makes my evening reset feel like me time. Featuring 1950s radio drama “Suspense!” episodes or Fibber McGee & Molly comedy episodes, it guides me through 30 minutes of cleaning tackling the following tasks:

  • Clearing clutter
  • Putting away that day’s laundry
  • Loading the dishwasher
  • Spot-cleaning high-traffic flooring areas
  • A little self-care time (because yes, we deserve it!)

By the end of the day, my house is clean, my family is fed, and I don’t feel like I spent all day chasing a mess. Instead, I’ve got time to relax in my haven of a home.
