Cleaning when you’re a mom is already a whole thing, but when you’re a mom with ADHD? It’s like leveling up to boss mode on a game you didn’t even want to play. The distractions, the overwhelm, and that relentless chorus of “Mom, Mom, Mom!” in the background can seriously derail any hope of wrangling the chaos.
The other day, I stumbled across a thread that said, “Once a woman cleans her house and lights her candles, don’t touch anything!” Honestly, I had to laugh because…same. I mean, there’s just something about lighting that candle as the final step of cleaning that feels like claiming victory over my day. But it also got me thinking about all the little sneaky tricks and rewards I weave into my cleaning routine just to keep myself motivated enough to start (and finish!) the job. Spoiler alert: those little hacks are probably the only thing standing between me and a house that looks like a tornado set up camp.

Today, I want to share some of my favorite cleaning motivation hacks that make tidying up just a little bit easier when your brain is constantly bouncing between 47 tabs (and one of them is always some random hyperfixation). Whether you need little rewards, micro-goals, or just something to trick your brain into getting started, I’ve got you covered! Let’s get into it!
#1. Making my own cleaning supplies.

There’s something so satisfying about making my own cleaning supplies—it’s like adding a little extra sparkle to my routine! One of my absolute favorites is my DIY non-toxic fabric spray, and trust me, it’s a total game-changer. (Don’t worry, I’ve got a video below to show you exactly how to make it!) Every morning, as part of my morning cleaning routine (you can find my post on my AM cleaning routine here), I take a moment to air out the beds. And here’s the best part: once that’s done, I spritz my homemade fabric spray over the sheets. It’s a little moment that makes the whole process feel less like a chore and more like a treat. Honestly, I look forward to that small, satisfying step every time. It’s those little joys that keep me motivated to tackle the rest of the routine! (Psssst! You can get my entire printable of non-toxic cleaning recipes here!)
#2: Cleaning Cart + Cute Apron!

One of the best things I did when I officially stepped into my “Homemaker Era” was create my very own cleaning cart and, of course, stock up on some cute aprons that make me feel absolutely fabulous while I clean! I went all-in and snagged a few dreamy vintage aprons from the 1950s (because who doesn’t want to channel a their inner 1950s housewife while tidying up), plus some more practical ones from Amazon for those heavy-duty cleaning days when I don’t want to risk messing up the vintage beauties.
Then there’s my cleaning cart! It’s my secret weapon. I’ve got a whole blog post dedicated to how I set it up (you can read it here) and even a recent video down below if you want a closer look. It’s loaded with all my go-to natural cleaning ingredients and my favorite homemade cleaning recipes (you can grab my non-toxic cleaning recipes printable here). To keep things extra simple, I always have my cleaning routine checklist on hand too (psst, get yours here!). There’s just something so deeply satisfying about rolling that cart from room to room and checking off every single task like a boss. It makes the whole process feel so much more fun!
Cleaning Motivation Hack #3: Signature Touches around the Home

Okay, I’ll admit it—while I totally make my own natural cleaning supplies, you’ll also catch me reaching for Bath and Body Works every now and then. It’s all about balance, right? When it comes to dishes (ugh, my least favorite chore… why are they so annoying?!), I’ve found a little trick to make it feel way less dreadful. Here’s my secret: a cozy candle, a beautifully scented hand soap, and a matching hand cream.
First, I light the candle so the vibe is set, then I slip on my dish gloves and get to scrubbing. When I’m done, I treat myself by washing my hands with that nice smelling soap and applying a dab of luxurious hand cream. It’s such a tiny ritual, but it has completely transformed how I feel about dish duty.
Instead of groaning about piles of plates, I actually look forward to these little self-care moments sprinkled throughout. And as an ADHD girlie, I’ve realized that rewarding myself during the task—not just after—is the ultimate game-changer for motivation.
